Illustration by Pauline Baynes

I have never liked the illustrations by Pauline Baynes for Narnia, though I reluctantly acknowledged that they evoked medieval tapestries and were thus a great choice.  In browsing around for references for the next post about time periods in Tolkien, I came across this map of Middle-Earth done by her.  I don't think I have seen in in forty years.  But I love it. The fellowship on the move above, the powers of hell pursuing below, the subcreated world which is really our world in the center.
